Snap Chess
Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 8, 2026
1. Overview
Snap Chess is a chess training app, currently free to use. This policy explains what data we collect and why. We collect only what's needed to make streaks, progress tracking, and (if you choose one) a username work — there's no account sign-up, email, or password required to use the app.
2. Device Identifier
We generate or read an anonymous device identifier (using your OS's built-in vendor/device ID where available, otherwise a randomly generated one stored on your device) so your progress can be tied to your device without requiring you to log in. This identifier alone does not reveal who you are.
3. Username — Only With Your Action
Snap Chess does not send or store a username unless you actively choose to create one. Creating a username is entirely optional; if you never set one, no username data leaves your device. Once you do create one, it's stored so it can identify your device's profile and is unique across all users. Don't include personal information in your username, and note it can't be changed once claimed.
4. Streak & Practice Data
We store which days you were active in the app, your longest streak, and how many tactics you've solved in total, so this can sync across app reinstalls on the same device and appear in the Streak tab.
5. Feedback
If you submit feedback, we store the message text and your device identifier, plus — only if you choose to provide one — a contact email, so we can review and (if you left an email) respond.
6. What We Don't Collect
We don't collect your name, contacts, photos, location, or anything from other apps, and we don't require any personal information to use Snap Chess. We don't use analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs, and we don't sell your data.
7. Data Retention & Deletion
Progress and, if you created one, username data is retained until you delete it. You can delete all server-side data tied to your device at any time from Profile → Delete my data in the app. Deletion removes your username, streak, tactics progress, and any feedback linked to your device identifier. Local streak and username caches on your device are cleared as part of that flow. If you cannot use the app, request deletion at snap-chess.netlify.app/delete-account.
8. Third-Party Services
We use service providers to run Snap Chess: Netlify (app and API hosting), MongoDB Atlas (database storage), and Mux (hosted lesson video streams). When you view a YouTube lesson reel, the app embeds YouTube's player; Google/YouTube may collect data independently under their own policies when that player is shown. We do not control third-party collection by YouTube or Google.
9. Push Notifications
To notify you about new lessons and, occasionally, individual messages from us, the app registers a push notification token (an anonymous identifier issued by Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging) tied to your device identifier. This token is stored only to deliver notifications — we don't use it for tracking or advertising. It's deleted along with the rest of your data via Profile → Delete my data, and you can turn notifications off at any time in your device's system settings.
10. Content Suitability
Snap Chess contains no adult or otherwise harmful content. Chess tactics and lesson videos are appropriate for a general audience.
11. Children's Privacy
Snap Chess is not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us data (for example, through the Feedback form), contact us via Feedback in the app and we'll remove it.
12. Security
We transmit data between the app and our servers using HTTPS (encryption in transit). We take reasonable measures to protect the data we store from unauthorized access, but no method of storage or transmission is 100% secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Continuing to use the app after an update means you accept the revised policy.
